On Thursday 23rd November 2023, we will be holding a Peer Group Chat on the topic of Asserting Our Boundaries.
Asserting our boundaries with others can be difficult to do, but it is vital to maintain our own mental well-being and wellness. Join us to chat about some experiences that you may have had with setting boundaries, the different boundaries that we may have, and how we can assert these to others.
The event start times across Australia are below:
This is currently held in daylight savings hours:
WA: 4pm
NT: 5:30pm
SA: 6:30pm
QLD: 6pm
NSW, ACT, VIC & TAS: 7pm
For anyone unfamiliar with Peer Group Chats, each focuses on a specific topic and is guided by Peer Workers with lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, &/or caring for someone with complex mental health. A counsellor is also present as a moderator to help ensure a safe environment for individuals and the group. It is a space for us as peers to share our stories and experiences, and connect with those who are going through something similar.
Anyone is welcome to join! Tagging some members who may be interested below:

I'm pretty sure I just had to assert a boundary in my own thread. I find myself adjudicating my level of compassion, against my fierce desire to love myself.

That's cool @deshift and a tricky thing to assert boundaries around too, when it sounds there's also a value conflict involved. I'd be really curious to hear what that experience was like for you, if it's something you feel comfortable sharing 😊
For myself, I was recently in traduced to a tool known as DEAR MAN I wanted to share in case it might be useful for anyone trying to assert themselves and their boundaries;
Describe
Express
Assert
Reinforce
Mindful
Appear confident
Negotiate
There is a video, article and worksheet you might like to look at also.
If you'd like to practice, we might be able to support each other here. If you have your own scenario to apply this to, awesome, otherwise, feel free to use my example- a close loved one comes to visit unannounced, then proceeds to criticise the cleanliness of your home, which does not meet their standard. Using DEAR MAN, how would you assert a boundary?

Location of a display cabinet. Friend helped me move the cabinet from garage into front bedroom. I was fairly sure exactly where I wanted cabinet to be and explained this to her. My friend felt it would be better in a different spot. I reiterated my thoughts adding additional information as to items to be displayed in cabinet and stressed why I thought about having it near front windows. I listened to things my friend said regarding her thoughts. In the end we agreed to place the cabinet where I first said about with agreement with 2 points, my house plus cabinet could always be moved at another time.
might not fully meet Dear Man but closest I could think of for actual situation
